The
Ariège has more caves than any other department in France.

d’Azil – so huge the river Arize flows through it and you can drive
through it by car - a national road and access to the town of Mas d’Azil actually
leads through it! |

grotte de Lombrives
near Ussat-les-Bains - The cave of Lombrives has a hall as large as the cathedral
Notre Dame de Paris. It is the biggest cave in Europe open to the public – often
called the Fifth Wonder of the World. There is a choice of 25 different types of guided
visits lasting between 1h30 and 5 hours. In the summer season, concerts are held in the
cave. |

Grotte de Niaux - this is a must for all
admirers of cave paintings, the paintings date from 11,000 BC, the Magdalenian period. You
can also walk along a subterranean river bed. This is a listed site in a very beautiful
location near Tarascon. |
